Farewell kerem shalom is a film about the withering away of the kibbutz ideal in Israel. It documents the period of the dismantling of the Kerem Shalom kibbutz, considered to be the most left-wing kibbutz in Israel. Kerem Shalom is also the first kibbutz to be liquidated and its members dispersed. The film captures the kibbutz members at a time of crisis against a background of desolation, moving like characters in a Greek tragedy towards an anticipated death. The scenes in the film are harsh as the camera captures individuals in mid-life, torn by the destruction of the place they chose to tie their destiny to, leaving their futures threatened and obscure. Kerem Shalom confronts the protagonist's different versions - each individual holds his or her own truth. The film conveys the difficult challenge for the kibbutz establishment in its current form to survive the passage into the next millennium. |
